cocoa prices have remained stable over the past two weeks despite the ivory coast export ban with industry analysts citing good industry supply cover and access to plentiful crop from ghana as factors for the lack of price volatility. large exports of the ivorian crop had already been made and big volumes of cocoa were said to be arriving at ports in the country this week ready to be shipped when exports are permitted, reports reuters.

consuming highly salty foods may begin to impair the functioning of blood vessels within 30 minutes, according to new research published in the american journal of clinical nutrition. the study suggests that 3.8 grams of salt – an amount similar to commonly eaten meals – can reduce the ability of blood vessels to widen after a meal when compared with a lower salt meal. the researchers found raised levels of salt from the diet can significantly reduce flow mediated dilation (a measure of blood vessels ability to widen) within 30 minutes.

sago starch-based edible films prepared using microwave irradiation have demonstrated potential to be used as antimicrobial agents in active packaging, according to new research. the study by l ruchi et al also measured how water vapour barrier properties of the film were influenced by its thickness and the presence of chitosan micro particles. the team said that previous research has shown that a range of organic and inorganic active agents can be incorporated into polymeric films to prevent microbial spoilage.

a vegetable packing company in the uk has been ordered to pay almost £20,000 (€24,000) after a worker was hospitalised in a workplace accident. qv foods ltd, of lincolnshire, was fined ₤15,000 and ordered to pay a further ₤4,606 in costs after a female employee was injured by a falling crate. the company pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the health and safety at work etc act 1974 for failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of its employees.

allowing ready meals and other composite products to carry the ‘5-a-day’ logo would encourage manufacturers to use more fruit and vegetables in their formulations, says innocent. the 5-a-day logo was introduced in the uk in 2003, and can be used on fresh, frozen, tinned or dried fruit and vegetables to indicate how many of the recommended five daily portions of fruit and veg are contained in each recommended portion.

a storm that has covered almost half of the us in a blanket of snow is starting to take its toll on food makers and retailers in the country.storms in the us have brought much of the mid-west under around 60cm of snow, with parts of the southern us forecast to get snow and ice this week. the severe weather has meant many firms have had to stall operations temporarily. us meat giant tyson foods said it has nine poultry plants in arkansas and missouri that are “either idle or running at reduced levels”.
