lion nathan national foods revenues down 11%

lion nathan national foods announced its results for the quarter ended 31 december 2010, with tough results across the board. revenues for national foods and lion nathan australia were both down 11%, to $729.8 and $430.2 respectively. white milk volumes declined 11% for national foods, and lion nathan’s 4% higher per-litre price was also knocked out by lower volumes. only lion nathan new zealand delivered increased revenue, up 9% at nz$204. more

private label sales up, but price war takes its toll

wilmar venture brings sustainable palm oil to eu

new britain palm oil ltd (nbpol) and singapore-based agribusiness wilmar international, owner of sucrogen, have established a supply and marketing deal to provide continental europe with traceable, segregated sustainable palm oil. the venture will supply uk-listed nbpol with palm oil from plantations in papua new guinea and the solomon islands certified by the roundtable on sustainable palm oil. the palm oil will be available from wilmar’s refinery in brake, germany. more

nestlé has announced that it is expanding its skinny cow range of low-fat frozen snacks, with the launch of its first confectionery range in the us. nestlé is introducing two new skinny cow branded products offering four different flavours. skinny cow dreamy clusters are bite-sized chocolate and caramel treats available in either milk or dark chocolate. skinny cow heavenly crisp are wafer bars available in peanut or chocolate varieties. more

blackstone eyes stake in uk confectioner tangerine

private equity group blackstone is close to acquiring the stake owned by investors growth capital partners in tangerine confectionery, the largest british manufacturer of sugar confectionery and branded popcorn, claim media reports. the major shareholders in tangerine, which has a current turnover is in the region of £150m, are the management with 54 per cent of the company. growth capital partners own 41 per cent, while toms, the danish chocolate manufacturer, hold the balance of 5 per cent. more

new yeast for fruitier wines takes a freezing approach

chr hansen is launching a new yeast for making fruitier wines that can be added directly as a frozen product rather than having to be rehydrated first. the danish ingredients supplier said the new strain was initially selected by auckland university in new zealand but was found to be unusable once dried. laurent hubert, marketing director for wine, told beveragedaily.com that chr hansen saw significant potential in the strain and therefore sought to find a new way to sell it. more

coke and pepsi settle trademark lawsuit

the coca-cola company and pepsico have settled a trademark lawsuit over pepsico’s trop50 juice packaging design, which coca-cola had claimed was too similar to that of its simply juice range. terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but us district judge sim lake signed an order to dismiss the suit late last week. coca-cola had alleged that pepsico was trying to piggyback on the success of its billion-dollar simply brand by confusing consumers with similar packaging, while diluting the quality of the coke juice brand. more
