lion nathan national foods announced its results for the quarter ended 31 december 2010, with tough results across the board. revenues for national foods and lion nathan australia were both down 11%, to $729.8 and $430.2 respectively. white milk volumes declined 11% for national foods, and lion nathan’s 4% higher per-litre price was also knocked out by lower volumes. only lion nathan new zealand delivered increased revenue, up 9% at nz$204.

many of australia’s supermarkets are moving towards private label groceries, but while consumers are interested, the price drop may be hurting retailers in the long run, according to new research by nielsen’s homescan panel. private label products grew slightly in the last six months, going from 24.5% to 24.7% of total groceries over two quarters. however, this quarter saw the average spend on private label drop by $5.

new britain palm oil ltd (nbpol) and singapore-based agribusiness wilmar international, owner of sucrogen, have established a supply and marketing deal to provide continental europe with traceable, segregated sustainable palm oil. the venture will supply uk-listed nbpol with palm oil from plantations in papua new guinea and the solomon islands certified by the roundtable on sustainable palm oil. the palm oil will be available from wilmar’s refinery in brake, germany.

private equity group blackstone is close to acquiring the stake owned by investors growth capital partners in tangerine confectionery, the largest british manufacturer of sugar confectionery and branded popcorn, claim media reports. the major shareholders in tangerine, which has a current turnover is in the region of £150m, are the management with 54 per cent of the company. growth capital partners own 41 per cent, while toms, the danish chocolate manufacturer, hold the balance of 5 per cent.

chr hansen is launching a new yeast for making fruitier wines that can be added directly as a frozen product rather than having to be rehydrated first. the danish ingredients supplier said the new strain was initially selected by auckland university in new zealand but was found to be unusable once dried. laurent hubert, marketing director for wine, told beveragedaily.com that chr hansen saw significant potential in the strain and therefore sought to find a new way to sell it.

bio springer has announced moderate price increases for its yeast extracts due to the rising price of sugar, which reached a 30-year high earlier this year. lessafre-owned bio springer, based in france, manufacturers its yeast extracts from primary grown yeast on sugar substrates – that is, molasses and sugar syrups. this means that the cost of sugar has a direct impact on the company’s cost base.
