high food prices and volatility in commodity markets are here to stay, according to a new report by the organization for economic cooperation and development (oecd) and the food and agriculture organisation (fao). the joint report said commodity prices should fall from the highs of early 2011, but in real terms are projected to average up to 20 per cent higher for cereals and up to 30 per cent for meats, over the 2011-20 period compared to the last decade. more

gum arabic blend may boost satiety, and aid weight loss

a dose as low as five grams of gum arabic may increase satiety and reduce caloric intake, without causing compensation at a subsequent meal, according to research. the new study, published in appetite, tested the satiety boosting effects of two blends of gum arabic (emulgold and previtae, produced by kerry ingredients and flavours) in healthy, non-obese, humans using both energy intake measurements and visual analogue scale (vas) scores. more

demand dip will see cocoa prices levelling off, rabobank

lacklustre demand for cocoa in europe and north america and expectations of an average crop next season will see cocoa prices remain steady over the coming months, claims a market analyst. traders, chocolate manufacturers and confectioners have been boosting their cocoa stocks over the past five weeks to restock and to hedge against price risk, notes keith flury, a soft commodities analyst with rabobank. more

chr hansen has an organic food colour project at development stage in the us although the danish supplier said the market is unlikely to become significant in the near term. as a specialist in natural colours, chr hansen has reaped the rewards of a big switch away from synthetics in recent years – its colours & blends division grew 26 per cent in the financial year 2009/2010. this popularity of natural colouring has been accompanied by some interest in organics. more

efsa rejects danone and yakult probiotic appeals

the european food safety authority (efsa) health claims panel says there are no grounds for alteration of its rejection last year of probiotic health claim dossiers submitted by danone and yakult. no cause for change: efsa affirms its rejection of danone and yakult dossiers in separate letters issued last week, efsa’s panel on dietetic products, nutrition and allergies (nda), said assessment of post-opinion comments about the nda’s opinions from danone, yakult and others did not demonstrate causality to, “change the conclusions of the nda panel. more

new lollipop can combat bad breath says firm

a new sugar-free lollipop can combat bacteria that cause bad breath, with an effect that can last up to six hours, claims israel based manufacturer breezy. taking three years to develop, the technology consists of microcapsules filled with zinc agents that scrape the tongue to remove food particles and odour-producing bacteria, claims the company. halitosis affects nearly 50 per cent of the adult population, primarily caused by aerobic bacteria that build up at the back of the tongue and are increased by dry mouth, smoking, medications, diet, and gum disease, according to the world dental federation. more

woolworths switches own-label milk from nf to parmalat

woolworths has announced plans to source all its own-label fresh milk products from parmalat in nsw, a move the company said is not related to its ‘milk war’ with coles. the company has moved the supply of own-label milk under the woolworths fresh and woolworths home brands labels in the state from national foods (recently renamed to lion) to parmalat. parmalat, which operates in australia under the paul’s, rev and breaka labels, is an italian-owned conglomerate, currently under a takeover bid from french dairy giant lactalis. more

global food prices to rise this decade

a major international report has predicted that average food commodity prices will be much higher this decade than the last. the organisation for economic cooperation & development (oecd) and the food & agriculture organisation (fao) have projected maize costs will be almost 20% higher this decade on average, and rice more than 15% higher. it also predicts that butter prices will soar worldwide and stay high, rising more than 45%, with poultry prices increasing 30% to 35%. more
