an interactive packaging launch by wine brand schmitt sohne is just the tip of the iceberg, according to datamonitor, with an explosion in quick response (qr) codes expected to appear over the next couple of years. the qr codes, when scanned by a smartphone take consumers to an online site where they can interact with the brand german-based schmitt sohne has added qr code technology to the labels and point-of-sale materials for all of its brands. more

muesli nutrition study renews traffic light labelling debate

the traffic light labelling system may have lost steam in europe but in australia, the debate has again been reignited with a new study on the nutritional content of muesli. found that “not all muesli lives up to its healthy reputation”, renewing its call for mandatory traffic light labelling. it said that people should not be swayed by nutrition claims alone, as “despite its healthful image, muesli can be laden with fat and sugar”. more

efsa experts publish review on non-plastic food contact materials

a large number of substances used in non-plastic food contact materials have never been evaluated, said a european food safety authority (efsa) working group tasked with developing a regulatory framework on the issue. the body’s scientific cooperation (esco) working group has also proposed that a pan-european network of experts be set up to help tackle crisis situations that surface in relation to such issues as printing inks , coatings, paper and board, and adhesives. more

tetra pak predicts asia will lead decade of high global dairy growth

china and india are expected to lead a 30 per cent increase in global liquid dairy consumption over the current decade, according to new research from tetra pak. a growing population, rising prosperity and urbanisation are all expected to conspire to bring about a boom in global dairy sales. while consumption is expected to fall in western europe, which has the highest per capita milk sales in the world today, in other regions a big increase in sales is expected. more

meps yesterday voted in favour of new laws on how food is labelled throughout the eu, a move they claimed will benefit both consumers and the food industry.the new regulations will see some changes to the way information on nutrition, country-of-origin and ingredients are displayed on food labels. the vote comes three weeks after the european parliament and the european council of ministers agreed on a final draft of the new labelling laws. more

food manufacturers need to start preparing to change their packaging after meps voted in favour of new labelling rules yesterday in the european parliament. small to medium-sized businesses might also need to re-think their finances as they are expected to be hit most by the cost of labelling changes. there is also disappointment that some of the changes did not go far enough, with alcoholic beverages exempt and no front-of-pack requirement for nutrition labelling, according to john dalli, european commissioner for health and consumer policy. more

Labelling rules for "quality” foods to be streamlined

dark chocolate and salt are among the foods covered by draft new rules that aim to speed up quality labelling of agricultural products in the eu. the eu agriculture committee has amended draft labelling rules, cutting the time allowed for the commission to respond to a request to register such a label from 12 to just 6 months. this would impact foods such as those falling under the \"protected designation of origin\" (pdo) label for products produced, processed and prepared in a given area, such as parmigiano reggiano. more
