foodnavigator conference to address food allergy challenges

incidence of food allergies and intolerances is on the rise in europe, and there are big gains to be made by companies who provide products that are safe and enjoyable for sufferers. some challenges remain, however, such as appropriate labelling, and future threshold levels.
foodnavigator has lined up a team of experts to explore the issues in manufacturing foods for allergy and intolerance sufferers at its conference on allergen-free foods, taking place in london on 31st march (see www.fn-allergenfree.com for more details and booking). food allergy incidence has been rising in the eu, with around 3.9 per cent of children suffering from an allergy - although allergies often become less severe or disappear in adulthood. the 12 major allergens recognised in europe are: cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, nuts, soybeans, milk, celery, mustard, sesame, and sulphur dioxide (at levels of over 10mg/kg). for the food industry, the biggest challenges are posed by ingredients with allergic potential that are used in composite foods where their presence may not be immediately apparent. while european law requires major allergens added as ingredients to be labelled, companies may seek to avoid litigation if cross-contamination occurs and some trace amounts make it into their products. however there are concerns that so-called ‘may contain’ labelling leads allergen sufferers to take chances, or restrict their diet even further than necessary. delegates at allergen-free foods will hear from speakers drawn from the scientific and regulatory communities, as well as from allergy charities and support groups, retailers, manufacturers and ingredient suppliers. they include chun-han chan, senior scientific officer for the allergen threshold programme at the uk’s food standards agency, who will take part in a panel debate on 2012 regulatory guidance, thresholds and limits for allergens – alongside dr rené crevel, science leader for allergy and immunology at unilever and geert houben, business line manager food safety, tno. the future of allergen management will be addressed by professor clare mills, programme leader, institute of food research, and dr charlotte madsen, research leader, technical university of denmark/national food institute, denmark. kate stein, technical manager at marks & spencer will provide the retailer perspective, while manufacturers represented include stiletto foods/mrs chrimbles, united central bakery. the conference’s headline sponsor is cosucra groupe warcoing and silver sponsor is national starch food innovation. the exhibitor is neogen europe.
